The teaching philosophy that I have adopted for my own sanity is one that includes no pressure to compete or do shows, no tricky sales tactics, and no contracts. I charge a monthly fee for group classes and an hourly, pay-as-you-go fee for private lessons. This reduces wasted time spent in an office battling out how much a student can or cannot afford, and has made the art of teaching dance more enjoyable for me. I don't worry about whether or not you will return, because if I make the lessons fun and worth it for you, you will come back.
I have a beginner program that includes 5 major ballroom dances; the Foxtrot, Waltz, Rumba, Cha-Cha, and East Coast Swing. You will learn three basic steps in each dance. This will take most students, on average, about three months to complete. However, there are many cases in which a student learns faster or slower than this. I do not expect every student to learn at the same pace, and we will go as fast as you can!
Once you can get around the floor comfortably with these basic steps, I then promote you into the Bronze 1 level which will take between eight months to one year and will include additional dances such as the Tango, Samba, West Coast Swing, and Salsa. You will also study technique and theory which will polish your dance appearance and sharpen your lead/follow skills. Once this level becomes somewhat boring and repetitive, you will move onto the Bronze 2 level. At an appropriate time toward the end of your Bronze 1 level, I will introduce you to some basic Silver 1 level Foxtrot and Waltz. Using this information guide, it takes the average student between 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 years to be a proficient and polished dancer on the social dance floor. Lessons beyond this will take you into the Silver level and more difficult patterns, as well as more advanced technique and theory. No one really ever completely learns to dance, it is a lifetime journey that keeps getting more and more interesting...and fun!
